Fuelling my training

March 7, 2019

I’m feeling pretty smug about the fact that I’m being uncharacteristically organised this year – not in general but with my sports nutrition, that’s something though, right?

Every year I seem to try every new bar, gel and carb mix out there, stick with it for a few weeks… change again. There’s never a real ‘plan’ when in the race either, just to keep eating. This year I’m excited to be working with Project E2 – who literally have everything I need to fuel, hydrate and recover over the next few months on the long build up to Kona.

I plan on doing a dedicated YouTube video on my actual Kona nutrition plan, but I need chance for the long rides and brick sessions to start back up before I can test and perfect it.

So for right now, this is what I’m using to fuel my current training volume (you can watch my latest YouTube video to see what I’m up to here)…

I’m currently OBSESSED with Hydro powder in Summer Fruits flavour – you’re probably sick of seeing me put it on my Instagram stories, but I’m having it on the daily.

This is what they have to say about it and all the sciency parts that you may want to know:

“PROJECT E2 HYDRO is an Electrolyte blend with the addition of CocoMineral™, a high-quality form of Coconut Water powder; delivering 30% NRV of Magnesium, Potassium and Calcium. As part of the Electrolyte blend PROJECT E2 HYDRO also contains a Triple-Action Sodium Complex, providing your body with Sodium Chloride, Trisodium Citrate and Sodium Bicarbonate. PROJECT E2 HYDRO is all about keeping your electrolyte stores supplied throughout your session as you sweat.

PROJECT E2 HYDRO has a fast-acting carbohydrate blend of Dextrose and Maltodextrin, both of which are easily digested through the stomach, and utilised by the aerobic energy system. This supplies energy to your muscles quickly, without the worry of gastric stress, allowing fuel to be obtained at the same time as your electrolytes.”

I’m pretty much having this for every session at the moment… none of my sessions are quite long enough for their Energy powder – which I will mainly use for those longer rides/bricks/runs in a few months time.

I avoid using gels until the mileage is up too, so at the moment I’m just using their energy bars, which I like either pre session or mid-ride at the moment.

The sciency part again:

PROJECT E2 ENERGY Bar is an Oat-based flapjack bar with added B Vitamins to reduce tiredness and fatigue in and around your training sessions or races. Each bar delivers over 250kcal of energy with 32g of complex carbohydrates and 10g of fat providing this.

PROJECT E2 ENERGY Bar contains high concentrations of both Vitamin B6 and Vitamin B12 which both contribute towards energy creation through their role in nutrient metabolism, especially glycogen. These work to assist your body in getting the most out of the fuel you provide during exercise.”

I can’t quite make up my mind which flavour out of the chocolate or banana that I like best… but I’m a fan. Most importantly for me, they’re not too sweet. I have a huge sweet tough, except when I’m training and can feel a little sick – these are just the right amount. I also really like the texture and know that it’s not going to go sloppy in hot conditions (soooo many experiences of mushed energy bar smeared across my face when trying to eat on a race!).

Okay so this next one is my favourite and will be great for after those really big sessions, but for now is serving me well for the shorter, spicy ones and also after tougher run sessions. I know SO many people struggle to eat after they train (I’m not one of those people except post-race), and it’s also good if you have to wait a while before getting some food in.

It’s the Recover powder in chocolate… it’s like the most delicious chocolate milk that you’ve ever tried, that also makes you feel great!

The important part:

PROJECT E2 RECOVER is a fast-acting dual Protein and Carbohydrate blend, with added Electrolytes, Vitamin C and Digestive Enzymes. Designed to replenish your body’s depleted energy stores, whilst supplying high-quality Whey Protein to your muscle tissue. It features a complete Electrolyte blend to replace the minerals lost through sweat, and the addition of Vitamin C, which contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. PROJECT E2 RECOVER is all about supplying what your body needs for replenishment and repair.

PROJECT E2 RECOVER has a fast-acting carbohydrate blend which acts to reduce muscle fatigue and the depletion of glycogen stores in skeletal muscle. This is easily digested through the stomach, with the help of digestive enzymes in the form of DigeZyme™. This allows your body to make the most of the high-quality ingredients within PROJECT E2 RECOVER.

PROJECT E2 RECOVER delivers protein in the form of solely Whey Protein Concentrate. This high-quality source of protein is well renowned for delivering a full amino acid profile and aiding the growth and repair of lean muscle. With all of this combined, PROJECT E2 RECOVER really can help you to recover faster and stronger, keeping you on track for your next race.”

There’s a strawberry flavour too but it’s not for me, chocolate all the way!

As mentioned, I will be sure to post a video with my actual race nutrition strategy, but for now this is the stuff that’s keeping me going, and hopefully you found it helpful!

Em x
